Desa Kayu means "wood village," and that's the whole idea: four houses built almost entirely from reclaimed and solid timber, left honest and unpainted so the grain does the decorating. Sliding glass and sheer curtains keep every room open to the rice fields outside, and the pace of the place follows the village around it — coffee on the terrace, a soak in an outdoor tub, sunbeds facing the paddy at dusk.
Kaba-Kaba is a working village, not a resort strip. Beyond the four houses, Desa Kayu is also becoming a home for retreats — yoga, breathwork, workshops and team offsites — run in the same spirit: unhurried, close to the land, and built from the same timber as the rooms you sleep in.
What's actually in the walls and the water
Two things guests ask about most, so we're upfront about both.
Natural materials, almost everything
Every house is solid reclaimed wood and bamboo, right down to the natural latex mattresses (Hevea) and a natural septic and draining system instead of a conventional sewage hookup. The only things on the property that aren't natural are the cement in the pools and the electronics — everything else is timber, bamboo, latex and earth.
Both pools are saltwater
No chlorine smell, no red eyes, no harsh chemical residue — just gentler on skin and hair, and a softer feel in the water. The salt system keeps sanitation steady instead of swinging in and out, which usually means less algae to fight too.
Kaba-Kaba village, rice fields on every side
Set in Kaba-Kaba, a quiet farming village away from Canggu's main strip — but still an easy drive to its cafés, beach clubs and surf breaks whenever you want them.
